Just on the news. Apparently some woman died in a fire. She called 911 while still inside and she was put ON HOLD!
So now we have some 911 people suspended without pay for 1 to 5 days. that's it? A person died and they get that? How about we hire some people who are actually smart and know how to act in a situation. This is just sad. _________________

Should there even be a hold button on their phones??? Of course, considering the amount of calls they're getting a day.... Someone, somewhere out there getting hurt, but still it's a wonder they could even bring themselves to put someone on hold... _________________
Nope, that's a little barbaric. We don't know the whole story, we don't know why these operators had to put her on hold...I'm sure it wasn't for a smoke break or anything. If they had all their lines tied up with emergencies, what else are they supposed to do?
Sure, they should be punished, but don't you think that the fact that someone died, and they have to live with themselves...I think that's probably punishment enough....and it will make them take their job even more seriously now. _________________ It's just four more miles. Everybody smile!
Very "Hammurabi-esque" if you ask me. Eye for an eye thing doesn't go over well with the human rights activists.
Thank you. And as I stated before...
I'm Asian. >:3c Historically and culturally, Asians have always been tough on their people. Which is why many in the Western world decry many Asian countries constantly and risk saber-rattling...
Oh wate... isn't that what the Olympics are for? *sarcasm* XD _________________
I know a lot of Asians, and they're not all that way. Be careful with generalizations.
That's not what I meant jade. I mean "as a whole". As in an entire nationality. I actually understand and know what I am talking about here.
And note my "historical and cultural" note I input. In Asia, the family or entire nation comes first instead of individual freedoms. It is for the good of all, instead of the one. Need I remind you of our so-called "perfect" political system where, instead of compromising differences, our electees fight instead?
What good is a political system if all our politians do is but fight amongst themselves? George Washington once said, when he was appointing his Cabinet for his presidency, "The two party political system will be the death of America."
It is primarily the reason why Asia had thrived for so long, while the West is collapsing once again. _________________

Here's where the lines blur, though: You describe the Asians to be more about the group as a whole and the greatest good for the greatest number. Sounds fairly utilitarian to me, and the thing is, so is the United States, they just happen to want to hide it because of their individualistic values. Democracy is TOTALLY a utilitarian system, it ensures that the majority get what they want, and that's IF the system is working properly, which I'd say it's not exactly doing right now....
There's not a world of difference between Asian and Western countries, we just think there is because the ones we're living in tell us there is. It's all a difference in our focus on individual or group, and with the US's focus on patriotism and corporate entities, I'd say we're going more "Asian" (by your definition) every day.
