Anyone like foreign movies?

I do. they just seem more thought provoking than USA movies. Has anyone seen the Dreamers or Paprika? Both those movies just question the very structure of movies. then you got others like Spirited Away, Infection, etc. I mean they are so much more thought provoking, even Infection which is a horror movie. Here in USA we only do blockbusters. Don't get me wrong, I love Jurrassic Park and all that but it seems like only foreign countries truly understand movies as an art.

I liked Spirited Away.^^

Each country tries to make movies according to what fits in society.

I watch Korean, Japanese and taiwanese movies with English subtitles.

I love Hong Kong films, and old martial arts flicks, both Chinese and Japanese.

I think it's a bit hasty to say that American movies aren't as "artistic" as other movies....just "HOLLYWOOD" movies.  The indie films can be quite excellent and thought provoking as well.  It's just that no one knows about them.

One of my favorite Chinese films is "Raise the Red Lantern".  It's a beautiful story.

>.< LULS, where I live, I don't see much "foreign" movies. XD

But I've seen native Korean movies. The ones I liked were "JSA", a "political" flim about the ongoing division of both Koreas. "Tae Guk Gi - Hwinalrimyeo", a melodramatic film about the insane Korean War (though I admit, some of it is very "Hollywoodish" XP). And "Gweomul" AKA "The Host", Vraps should remember this one! ^^

I've seen "Oldboy" too. Creepy film if you ask me. It's about one man who seeks revenge upon the person who wronged him.

Much violence and for f%*kin' serious WRONG pairings ahead.

It's too bad that Hollywood outstrips the good foreign films... Sad

Ah yes...the host. Damn sexist idiot. Your daughter is lying motionless and you walk right by her without even attempting to see if you can save her from whatever Agent Yellow did. And then you go right to the boy and check on him? And even after how she's teh one that did so much to contact you, get people to the monster, etc. geez...that little girl was likly the only smart person in the movie. Evil or Very Mad

And it didn't help that they were advertising the movie as "the best MONSTER MOVIE since Jaws." No, it was not a monster movie; it was a political statement.

man I hated that movie. That and Dragon Wars....and Cloverfield and.....screw it...every single monster movie latly has sucked compared to the classics. I think the only one that got close was Snakes on a Plane.

Well, the main character was a mentally slow person (in the movie). I think Song Kang-Ho did a wonderful job on playing his part. And so did all the others.

LOL, "Shi****~!"

Granted, it wasn't really a "monster movie" in my eyes, I saw it as more of a movie that brought a struggling family together in hope to find their loved one, but unfortunately, it turns tragic and leaves a bittersweet ending.

I liked Gweomul. If not for it's lackluster plot, then the character acting made up for it. Smile

Yeah. It is definitely a political wake-up call to the US to get them to fuxxin' APOLOGIZE for what they did in Vietnam and Korea.

But what does the government do instead?

US govt: "Oh sh!7!!! A Korean movie about anti-USA! And...-GASP- AGENT ORANGE?! Oh teh NOES! This is outrage!!! RAWR! *spits out propaganda reviews and shit"

Korea: *doesn't give a shit*

And I find it FUNNY that the US has LOADS MOAR propaganda movies than any other country combined. Take for example, "Saving Private Idiot". LAWLS.
Lyssandra

In every country, you're going to get films and other media that promote their national values and ideas. It's not whether or not the US does it more, but whether or not these things can be overcome by good old RESEARCH.

Which is why foreign films are great. Gives you completely different propaganda from a different perspective.
jadehorse77

The US has loads more propaganda movies because they make loads more movies overall.

I'm not going to get in a debate about what the US did or didn't do to Vietnam and Korea....but the people who are responsible for it are no longer in power.  I didn't do anything to Vietnam or Korea, my family didn't do anything to Vietnam or Korea, my friends and teachers didn't do anything....so who is supposed to apologize?  Bush?  It's the same as the anti-Japanese sentiments.  The PM of Japan today didn't do anything to China during the war, he was just a kid...but they want retribution?  From who?  I just don't understand this way of thinking.  If thinking this way is valid, then I should be expecting England and France to apologize for taking the Americas away from my ancestors.  But that's not going to happen, so why be upset over it?  It just seems like a waste of emotional energy.

Yeah...but still. Look at what Germany is doing.

If they, all of a sudden, decided to retact their apologies and revise their textbooks to where the Holocaust was barely touched upon, what do you think would happen? =|

Lots and lots of angry people.

The only reason why Japan hasn't apologized is because they are a good "ally" of the United States. =|

I see...so that's why most traditionalist Asians are seen as "backwards" by "civilized" Westerns. Well, to clear it up...

Asians are not taught to be tolerant against others who have wronged them. They'll either seeth a load and blow up...or just get angry and let a fist fly.

It's just our way of life and culture. That's it and nothing can change that.

Japan is slowly responding to stuff. Basically...once the war generation finally dies, you'll see appologies.

Yeah, and ironically enough, Nazi war criminals are still getting life imprisonment by the US and their "allies". Great job, eh?

Rolling Eyes I believe Japan doesn't wanna apologize simply because the government wants to keep their "hard-earned" cash. Rolling Eyes Yeah fucking right...over 20 million dead, what does that mean to Jap government anyway?

Besides, I'm sure they could retract every single little apology and STILL get away with it because they are butt buddies with America.

Nice system against the half of world, while "preaching" shit about human rights. As long as they are your good "allies", they don't get ripped a new one. Way to fucking go US of A. Rolling Eyes
