You must remember that Paolini was very young when he wrote the first book, and he needs some time to refine his writing skill. That may be why it seemed lame.
I enjoyed it a lot, and I enjoyed the movie, even though they changed too much of it for my taste.

No, his writing skills were marvelous in my opinion (ignore the 'non-critical on writing style as long as it's okay' person over here) the plot just seemed annoying to me. Actually... Eragon was pretty good. Eldest lost my interest.

That's probably because it had so many boring parts and not enough action unlike eragon.Eragon had quite a few action scenes in it.
