Harry Potter 7For those of us who have finished the last Harry potter book, come discuss it here.

I thought two things were cop-outs in this book:
1. I didn't think that both Tonks and Lupin would have both died if Harry hadn't been made godfather. There was some obvious tie-in there that meant Harry had to be made to raise little Teddy.
2. Voldemort meant to kill Harry, but ended up missing him and destroying the part of his soul that resided in Harry instead of destroying them both. That was a pretty weird idea that I'm still struggling with and I can only explain away as a cop-out.
Otherwise, it was a good read. Pretty slow in the beginning for me, but once I got past the Malfoy Manor chapter, it started picking up speed in my opinion. I was also extremely happy with how Snape's character unfolded there at the end, tying up all the loose ends about him, but that might have been because I predicted the thing. That is one bet I WOULD have won, if my mother had cared to participate; she was on the opposite side.
Yin-Yang Heart
Yeah, a lot of people were on the opposite side, but I laways loved Snape. No matter what book 7's result was gonna be. I also had a feeling Snape was gonna die. He is that tragic, mysterious character. Been reading some good chibi Snape fics and other fics revoliving around Snape since I finished reading. god, why'd my favorite charcter have to die!? Anyways......
Overall, I loved the book.

that 19 years later crap was pathetic. Also...only a breif mention of Chow? She was harry's girlfriend who broke up do to missunderstandings.....and all we get is "oh....she lived and she was there battling against Voldi's army too." What is it with all the cop out romances in pop culture latly?
Yin-Yang Heart
I actualy didn't like Cho, no offesne. Although, I am a huge Snape/Lily shipper. And JKR will prboably release an encyclopedia eventualy, she herself said there was a lot more to the 19 years later thing then we saw in the book. for example ,Ron and Harry became auruors and revolutionised the ministry. Hermione is working in magical law department. She said this in an interview. So, I can't wait for the encyclopedia.
Lyssandra
Yes, I heard about the encyclopedia as well. I can't wait for that, but she'll probably want to take some time off before she starts working on that....
And I know what you mean, Yin-Yang, Snape was my favorite character as well. In the end, he turned out exactly as I had hoped, and still the character I was curious about in the very beginning of the series.
Yin-Yang Heart
Yeah, I expect it'll probably come out a bit closer to the release of the 7th movie. Obviously, JK, can afford to take some time off from writing.
Lyssandra
She could have afforded to do it a LONG time ago, with all the money she's earned on the first three books altogether.
Yin-Yang Heart
True. But maybe she didn't wanna do it untill the series was more complete.
Lyssandra
I'm sure it's the path I would have taken if I were in her shoes.
Yin-Yang Heart
One just must wonder what she's gonna write next. I mean, i'm sure she'll keep writing books.
Lyssandra
I think she must have said something about doing some non-children's books. Either that, or I made it up in my head.
I do that a lot.
In any case, I'm sure I've heard it somewhere....
Yin-Yang Heart
Not sure. But if she does, I'd love to read em. I mean, god Harry Potter ended up being loved by just as many adults as children, eventhough it's a "children's" series. Immagine what she can do with a non-children's book.

There's an encyclopedia coming out later? I'm getting that no matter what.
Yin-Yang Heart
Yeah, I'll probably get it too, whenever it comes out.
Lyssandra
I'll probably sit around in Borders until they kick me out reading it instead of coughing up the cash to get it.
Yin-Yang Heart
That's what I do with manga for the most part.
Lyssandra
Because manga is hideously expensive most of the time. Popular series can easily be forty dollars for one volume. *shiver* It's enough to make anyone sit in a bookstore for hours trying to read it before they tell you that you have to leave.
Speaking of prices, where did you get the seventh installment of Harry Potter, and what did you pay for it? I got mine at Borders (surprise surprise) and paid a good 30 bucks for it.
Yin-Yang Heart
I got mine at Borders too, for 20 something dollars^^
Lyssandra
I wonder what it means for me if prices are higher in Denver.
Yin-Yang Heart
god knows! Harry Potter will start becoming a bit cheaper soon, though. At least I hope.

LOL I see that reading manga volumes in a bookstore but not buying them is a common idea. ^.^ And I got mine at Walmart, first day, for a good price. The thing is that it was in Hawaii since I was on vacation when it came out. I made my mom allow me to get it since I was driving her crazy.
Yin-Yang Heart
Yeah mom, I need to know if putting my trust in Snape was a good idea or not. LOL. I can see where saying stuff repeatidly like that would drive someone to insanity.
Lyssandra
Bah! I knew that Snape was on Dumbledore's side from the fifth book (before then he was still a favorite of mine, but I wasn't sure whether or not he could be counted as a good guy). It seemed to me that he was in love with Lily from that memory Harry saw, so I stuck with the idea.
Of course, he still didn't turn out to be a likable character... Likable for me because he was easy to mock, but I'm sure that if I were to actually face someone like him, I'd be absolutely terrified.
Yin-Yang Heart
Well, I think he was a good guy with a terrible atitude towards life. Very insecure due to his past and bitter, as well, but not a bad guy.
Lyssandra
Insecure hits the nail on the head, I think. Probably why he had to make everyone ELSE feel terrible about themselves.
Yin-Yang Heart
Yeah, I think for him it was a defense mechanism. *Hugs Sev* I still love him though^^
Lyssandra
Oh gods, that just reminded me of those Potter Puppet Pals Productions (nice alliteration, huh?). "Have you hugged your Snape today?" great comedy. If you haven't seen these little flash movies, look them up!
Yin-Yang Heart
LOL Yeah, sounds like something I should look up. But Snape is a perfect example of someone who was tortured at home and bullied in school and then as he gets older due to his insecuritues he becomes a bully.
Lyssandra
Well, we humans have a nasty tendency to become what we hate under the pretenses of defeating it. Besides this, we also tend to take to what we know. Since all Snape knew was bullying (with the exception of Lily, until they discontinued being friends) that was likely all he understood.
Of course, we see instances during the books where that doesn't exactly hold true, because Harry grew up an orphan like Voldemort and disliked severely for the first ten years of his life, and he didn't turn out remotely like Voldemort or Snape, so I suppose there's something to be said for that.
Yin-Yang Heart
Yeah, normal human flaws from flawed lives are not applied to title characters. Or, I guess you can say that Harry was a stronger person and blah, blah, blah. LOL
BTW, those Potter Puppet Pals are freakin hilarious.
Lyssandra
What did I say??? GREAT comedy! I love Dumbledore's naked song. *nods*
Anyhow, of course Harry's a stronger person, he has to be, otherwise he would have succumbed to the dark arts and there wouldn't be your typical loving hero defeats emotionless villian storyline. That was what it was all about, right? Harry's ability to feel vs. Voldemort's inability. It's a good thing sexual relationships don't require emotional attachment, or Bellatrix would have been in trouble there, huh? Heh heh, I'm a bad person....
Yin-Yang Heart
Oh god, Bella is strange. And I still think Harry being a stronger person has to do with the fact that he's a title character.
Lyssandra
Bella WAS strange.... by the gods it creeps me out to think of ANYONE sleeping with Voldemort: the snake-like wonder... gross. *shiver*
The fact that Harry's the title character make it a bit suspicious, which is why there would be no story if he turned evil, lol! Although, in the sixth book I think he was a little bit of a jerk... of course, everyone was a jerk in that book.
Or maybe it was just me.
Yin-Yang Heart
Exactly. That's why the title character has to endure situations better than other characters. But I gravitated more towards Snape cause he was more human, to me. And, eww, anyone sleeping vith Voldy is gross. Although a teenage Tom Riddle wasn't quite so bad looking. Oh, and another example of someone acting like a git eventhough they knew friendship was Wormtail. I mean, good lord. Ewwwwwww! At least Bella wasn't intrested in him. And yeah, the sixth book was tense.

Speaking of prices...I got my copy pre-ordered at Books a Million for $18.95. Pretty good if you ask me. I've got a membership card, 'cause we buy manga and novels pretty regularly, so it's worth it.
Sorry off topic, but you said $40 for manga????? I haven't seen any manga volumes for more than $12.95. IY, Ranma, Ai Yori Aoshi, Mermaid Saga, I've seen all of those for $10.00.
I'm with you Lys, I knew from the memory in book 5 that Snape was in love with Lily and I suspected that that would be the reason for his trustworthiness.
I knew it was Regulus that took the locket...but I wish she would have elaborated a little more on that..seems like she dropped the handle on that one.
Yin-Yang Heart
Well, she had to give a reason for Snape's trustwortiness, and it wasn't gonna be James. Teen james was a git to Snape, so can't blmae him for that one. LOL
