To some this is simply one of the two times of the year when day and night are in equal parts because of the Earth's position relative to the sun.
However, if you know anything about Pagan traditions, the fall equinox is equated with the Welsh god Mabon, who was a male fertility symbol. It's a harvest festival, and is often accompanied by the activities of cider pressing, grain threshing, dancing and eating (of course), and crowning a harvest king and queen.
Of course, here in Gunnison and in Crested Butte, everyone looks forward to Vinotok, another celebration of the autumnal equinox that is similar in many ways to the pagan tradition. I think the college kids go up to Crested Butte to make fun of the festivities and eventually get drunk and dance around a bonfire naked though....

What are you so cunfused about?
And speaking of apologizing for witchhunts, I'm just waiting for someone to claim damage and start trying to get the Church to pay monetary compensation, like Germany is doing for those of Jewish traditions.
