I know there has to be some out there, but I haven't read any fanfictions about Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru's first meeting, and what caused them to be such great enemies. Sesshoumaru is, after all, the only family Inuyasha has left. I've speculated about this for a long time, and I came out with this. Enjoy.

--------

Ive migrated south for the winter.

This was the note that rested nailed upon one of the jagged teeth perfectly situated in the skeletal mouth that was the formal entryway to Toutousais home. Though the old man was undeniably the best sword-smith those of the youkai kind had ever seen, or possibly will ever see in the future, he was incredibly dense. Someone with such brilliance when it came to crafting blades should not be so idiotic as to make up such a ludicrous excuse for being away from home. It only took half a brain or more to realize that Toutousai had fled because he had gotten word that Sesshoumaru was coming to pay him a visit.

Therefore, Sesshoumaru came to the conclusion after reading the aforementioned note that Toutousai was either senile, or incredibly stupid. He was leaning toward the former in some part of his mind, because his father would never have befriended someone so naturally moronic. Then again, his father was prone, just as everyone else, to his lapses in judgement. What else but poor judgement could account for the case of his taking a human mate?

No, this was not the time to be wondering, once again, about his fathers sanity when it came to alliances, friendly or romantic. This time was reserved for finding out where exactly his father had stashed the infamous Tessaiga before he died. Ever since the Inu No Taishou had commissioned that sword, Sesshoumaru had looked upon it as pure genius. It appeared worthless when not in use, but when transformed, it could slay 100 youkai in a single pass, and was a beautiful representation of his fathers superior sense of cunning and aggression. It was a shame the weapon had been forged for the sake of that human woman.....

Sesshoumaru had never met her, nor had he ever cared to even attempt such a meeting. His fathers business was his business alone, and it was of no consequence to Sesshoumaru who his sire bedded, no matter how shameful and dirty it seemed to the son that admired him so. It did not escape his attention, however, about how fondly his father spoke of the mortal, in a way that he had never spoken about his previous mate. This grieved Sesshoumaru in a somewhat irrational way, as he realized quickly, especially since it had been a good century since his mother had gone her own way, being the one to leave his father for someone else, though it had never been a human. Yet, Sessoumaru still felt it was demeaning to the previous relationship his father had enjoyed with a creature far more worthy of the great youkai.

Even so, the great dog that was his father had never attested to being so content with a woman, and even said that he was happy. At the time, Sesshoumaru had thought that the idea of happiness coming from something so trivial and beneath such a powerful being laughable; a great joke that was far from amusing in a conventional sense. Ever since his father had passed to the next world, he knew it to be not even remotely funny, it was instead suicidal. The daiyoukai would not have committed such flaws in battle with a creature he could clearly have overcome if he had been in his right mind. But he had not been sane; he had been, simply put, in love.

It made Sesshoumaru angry to think that his own father, once the greatest youkai in the entire expanse of the western territories, had fallen because of one mortal woman. He should never have fallen to some arrogant dragon with power that was meager and weak compared to his; he should never have fallen to anyone, except perhaps Sesshoumaru himself. However, he let himself be defeated because of several shortsighted mistakes, all of them concerning that woman in one way or another.

It was no matter. The powerful sword that his father had failed to use in his final battle would soon be in capable hands, and an unclouded mind. Then Sesshoumaru would unseal that idiot dragon and show him exactly what his father would have done, had he not gone soft for a worthless human. He would avenge his fathers early demise and honor, and he would do it with nothing if not with Tessaiga. If things went well, he would prove to the magnificent blade that it was to be used for more than protecting humans. Protection was a weak excuse for a sword; Sesshoumaru would show it its true potential.

But where to find it? It was now some time after his father had passed on, and Sesshoumaru had searched all across the islands to which it had to be confined without so much as a whisper as to its whereabouts reaching his superior ears. Where could the Tessaiga be? Why was Sesshoumaru unable to find it; Sesshoumaru, who could be the only heir to his fathers great sword?

No... not the only heir, but the only capable heir. For he knew by now, though he often let the fact slip his mind because of its lack of importance, that he had a young brother. He was the spawn of the human, however, and Sesshoumaru would be damned if he ever accepted such a disgrace of a halfling as his own family. His father had made a mistake, that was all, and the younger hanyou was an unfortunate result of that mistake.

Indeed, he barely even let so much as a thought of his little brother cross his mind, but this time the idea gave him another intriguing one. Not so long ago, he had heard tell of the mother of this young bastard dying from a grave illness from some cowardly hogs who had passed the message along to him. They mentioned their intentions of running to kill the child, who had no more relatives to protect him and human villagers who despised him, and suggested that Sesshoumaru do the same. He had killed them. Such talk of slaughtering helpless children disgusted Sesshoumaru. What sort of challenge would that be to him? None, that was what, and so he left their sorry carcasses in the dust as he ignored the thought of his younger sibling altogether.

Now, though, the child may have had a use to him yet. How old would he be now? Four or five decades, at least, and too young for a hanyou to be wandering around alone. If he hadnt been killed yet, he would likely be residing around the village that he inhabited with his late mother. What old retainer would pass up the opportunity to look after his past masters son if such circumstances should arise?

Myouga... The old flea would no doubt be able to tell Sesshoumaru where Tessaiga was hidden.

*~*~*~*~*~*

Inuyasha-sama! Slow down! Myouga cried helplessly as the child raced through the trees. He may have been the size and shape of an eight or nine-year-old boy, but he was already must faster than a human child, and much more agile as well. He leapt with great grace over bushes and under low-hanging tree limbs, and traced a zig-zag pattern through the forest floor, grinning devilishly the entire way.

Dont fall off, jiiji! Inuyasha called, casting a glance up toward one of his dog-like ears, where Myouga was clinging for dear life. Or Ill leave you behind!

So rude to his elders.... Myouga whined unhappily, while trying to tighten his grip.

I hear you up there! Inuyasha whined back, not quite having developed an intimidating growl or bark yet. He swore when he did, he would tell that flea off for never leaving him alone, and Myouga would go away for good. All Inuyasha wanted was to visit his mother alone, but Myouga would never let him, claiming that all varieties of his fathers old enemies would come looking for him, and Inuyasha would never know the best places to run to if he werent there to guide him.

The young hanyou never knew anything about his fathers enemies, but Myouga told him they were much too powerful for him to overcome. They had come across some of them already, from which Myouga had insisted they hide, despite Inuyashas own eager and over-zealous intentions. Little did he know that he had been better off listening to the old flea, even if he was a coward. In these cases, he had been sensible, and Inuyasha would surely have been dead by now, had he not begrudgingly followed his instructions.

Lately, though, Inuyasha had been so annoyed with simultaneously hearing about his fathers greatness and then running like a coward from his enemies. He had very few memories of his father, but from Myougas description of him, Inuyasha thought that he should be able to do anything that he could. To the little hanyou, he should be just as strong as his father; after all, he did come from him.

Yes, unluckily for Myouga, Inuyasha just couldnt understand that it took quite a long time to develop strength, and a good trainer at that. Every time they had to hide, Myouga had to bribe Inuyasha with something that he couldnt resist to get him to cooperate; namely human food, and preferably something sweet. So it came to be that Inuyasha and Myouga together did quite a bit of stealing on top of their activities of running. Inuyashas young life was starting out to be a little more shameful than intended.

A condition that Inuyasha himself established, though, was that every time they passed a field with flowers in it, Inuyasha should be allowed to pick them for his mothers grave. He frequently visited the marker, and refused to leave it bare, or with shriveled wild flowers lying on it. It was a shame upon him if his mother did not continue to reveal an impression of loveliness, even after she was dead, and so he took it upon himself to keep her resting place looking clean and respectable.

Today was one of the days when Inuyasha insisted that he had seen the prettiest flowers, and therefore most worthy of his mother, lying in a basket next to a hut in the village. He snatched the entire bundle and carried his bouquet out of the town as fast as his two legs could carry him, so as not to leave a trail behind that the original laborer could follow. Of course, he was still full of energy, and so continued to run, even when out of the villages sight, much to old Myougas despair.

Its only just up ahead! Myouga called, relief to be had in his shout, but a moment later he twitched, as he sensed a familiar, and quite dangerous aura. But this is.... WAIT INUYASHA! STOP!

I cant stop now, jiiji! Inuyasha pouted while he flicked the screaming flea off of his ear, even as Myouga continued to shout warnings at him that he didnt hear. He was tired of listening to a flea, and his mother had to have her flowers. The others must have dried out by now.

It was quiet and peaceful at his mothers grave, something that he always appreciated when he came there. The marker was now a few years old, perhaps five, but it still evoked a feeling of sadness that had never quite warn off of Inuyasha. When the kind village doctor had told him that he would no longer see his mother, he had felt the same. Shortly after she was buried there, the doctor had told Inuyasha never to enter the village again, and the sadness was the same then too. He had disobeyed, and wandered back into the town, only to be chased out by the headman and others, and experienced the same feeling.

It was the feeling that he was truly and utterly alone, with no one to call friend nor family. Myouga came along, but he was nothing but a nuisance, always following Inuyasha around and teaching him nothing but stealth, when he should have been learning strength. Since the day they had been so cruel; the day they had forced him out of the village, he had wanted to make them pay for their cruelty, and show them that they had made a mistake. He swore he would never be treated like that again, but all anyone ever seemed to do was give him that feeling; the sadness that came with knowing you were alone, and there were no more people you could call friend to help you feel wanted.

His mother had gone, and who was left to look after him? A flea who was a dishonorable wretch. Inuyasha didnt want to live like this, as he was old enough to know better. He wanted to be a powerful youkai, and someone who his family could have been proud of. The only problem with that was that he never knew what his father wanted, and his mother was so vague as to want whatever he wanted. He wished he had reliable guidance....

It was so quiet that he realized at last Myouga wasnt there. He had finally been able to visit the grave without the flea attempting to feast on him or talk incessantly to spoil the peace that hung around this place. Inuyasha smiled to himself, thinking he was finally alone here.

How wrong he was did not strike him until he saw a white blur before a strong hand gripped him around his neck and held him high above the ground. The little hanyou looked over the fingers curled around his throat to see a graceful man with silver hair and eyes like his, along with pointed ears, pale skin and a crescent moon painted on his forehead, and two stripes on each cheek to complete his abnormal appearance. Inuyasha was fascinated, until he saw that this man was standing right one top of his beloved mothers grave.

You! Get your feet off of that ground, stupid! Inuyasha swiped his claws at his captor as hard as he could, but nothing seemed to hurt him. The man narrowed his eyes at the young boy held in his hand, but didnt seem to focus his sharp eyes on Inuyashas face. Instead, he was looking at his hair and ears. When he had let his eyes rove over the vicinity several times, he glared straight into the hanyous eyes with a certain ferocity, and this was so frightening he immediately froze and ceased struggling.

You are Inuyasha. This was not a question, yet Inuyasha answered with a fraction of a nod, the only thing he could muster due to his position.

Something else might have been uttered, perhaps about the whereabouts of Myouga, but something of incredible size and considerable might leapt out of the trees surrounding and at the stranger. Not a second passed before this unknown man dropped Inuyasha, turned gracefully and swiped at the oni that had dared to challenge him. The oni shuddered as his torso was split in two, and his halves collapsed to the ground in a heap of bloody mess.

The mysterious man turned back to Inuyasha with his face serene and almost perfectly bored, as if it had taken no energy at all to slay the thing that had attacked only a few moments before. Inuyasha, on the other hand, was so amazed that his wide eyes had become that much wider, and his mouth was hanging open in absolute wonder. He had never seen anything quite so amazing in his young life, and nothing like that could have come from the coward Myouga.

Before the stranger could speak another word, even if it had occurred to him to speak to the child again, Inuyasha was standing in front of him with the most ridiculous look of awe on his face. They stared at each other for a moment or two, and all the while Inuyasha couldnt decide what to ask first. He thought about asking him if he was a youkai, and where he had learned to kill so quickly, and a million other things, but he settled for the most fundamental question he could think of.

Who ARE you?

The answer was a cold glare, and one name. Sesshoumaru.

It's about time right? Second chapter, coming your way....

This was... somewhat puzzling. As Sesshoumaru looked upon the little hanyou before him, he got the impression that he was being admired. He was no stranger to such feelings from others, but for something so simple as slaying an insignificant ogre? It would be almost laughable, if not so utterly sad. This child had lead quite a sheltered life; by Inuyashas age, Sesshoumarus father had already shown him many instances in which he killed, and Sesshoumaru had studiously taken note, knowing that someday he would be strong enough to accomplish the same. Inuyasha, though....

Inuyasha had undoubtedly grown to identify with the human half of his blood a bit more than that of his great father. If Sesshoumaru remembered correctly, Inuyasha was only on the edge of toddler-hood when the Inu No Taishou had died, and had barely known anything about him. This brat, so deprived of the perspective of his better half; Myouga would pay dearly for making the boys disposition so incredibly weak.

But he had not found Myouga, and the flea would surely have tried to run the moment he sensed Sesshoumaru in the vicinity. Where was the mangy parasite? Sesshoumaru cast another glance at Inuyashas hair and ears before turning away and beginning to step over the grave marker that Inuyasha had been so eager to visit. If Myouga was abandoning his duties and leaving his former masters child alone to be devoured by the world, that simply gave Sesshoumaru more of a reason to find the old man, and destroy him for being so disrespectful of his fathers wishes.

Inuyasha had other ideas, though. Wait! he called, dashing in front of the man again, this time with a impish grin. How do you know me? Are you one of my fathers enemies?

Sesshoumaru was taken aback. So, Myouga had not abandoned the boy after all. How else could a weak hanyou boy survive for so long while knowing his fathers old enemies were after him? Besides, Inuyasha seemed to have that look of empty-headed confidence that would have had him slaughtered in an instant, had he actually met any of them. Where is Myouga? Sesshoumaru inquired, frowning at the dirty little thing that had dared stall him again.

Though this time, Inuyasha drew up his chest as much as he could muster and pouted at the man with narrowed eyes in his only real show of courage thus far. I asked you a question first.

Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes at the nerve of the child, who must have been very stupid to stand in his way like so. Still, there was no reason to kill him; he could not have been stronger than Myouga himself, who continued to be a person Sesshoumaru was very eager to find. If this boy could not pose a challenge to him in a battle, then it would be a sad and dastardly thing to slay him. So, it seemed Sesshoumarus only option was to ignore the child and continue his quest to finding the whereabouts of his fathers sword.

It wasnt as easy as that, because even as Sesshoumaru stepped around the child and began walking to where he had come from, Inuyasha was following. I dont think you are one of my fathers enemies, because if you were, you would have tried to kill me already. But maybe you think Im too weak. I know that Myouga-jiiji doesnt let me fight, but I could fight you. You know, if you ARE his enemy....

Sesshoumaru allowed an almost unnoticeable twitch of his eye. I am not the enemy of your father.

Well then, how did you know my name? All of them knew my name. Inuyasha jogged around to the other side of Sesshoumaru out of restlessness, and even as he got there, no answer escaped the taller man.

This was actually quite irritating to Sesshoumaru, being that he was not used to dealing with children. That, and he had no desire to answer his questions at all, save to show the whelp what his power could have been had he been born a full youkai. He briefly wondered whether or not his father had ever mentioned to Inuyasha anything about having a sibling. Sesshoumaru imagined that it was unlikely, as the Inu No Taishou would know that such a fact would not stick in a babys mind, nor would the infant have any concept of what big brother would mean.

Come on, how did you know? Inuyasha asked again, almost bouncing with energy, he tugged on Sesshoumarus sleeve, only to be ignored as Sesshoumaru deeply considered where Myouga could have run to... Or at least attempting to do so. He might have continued to ignore Inuyasha, if not for the very fast realization that ignoring him would do no good. Also, in the back of his mind, he wanted Inuyasha to know exactly who he was and what that meant; Sesshoumaru wanted to make sure that the child had no doubts as to who was the superior between the two of them.

His nose could not have picked a better time to sniff out Myouga. He hadnt thought that he might actually tell Inuyasha who he was, though it was a tempting idea. Avoiding it seemed the better option, however, and there were more pressing matters to attend to than educating a certain little brat. There was a moment while Sesshoumaru stood still and rigid, trying to pinpoint Myougas exact position in the foliage.

It took a mere moment to invade that position, crouching dangerously in front of a single trembling leaf that could only be Myougas hideout. The flea attempted to find an escape route, but he was too slow for Sesshoumarus deadly precise claws, which gripped the tiny creature by his minuscule clothing so he could hold him up to his face and glare menacingly at him. So, Sesshoumaru would have been sneering if he could bring himself to twist his face into such an unattractive expression, you are still alive.

O-only if you w-wish it, Sesshoumaru-sama... Myouga burst into tears. Oh please be merciful! I would never have let the boy wander so far if I had known you would be here, and I....

You are not pleased to see me, then? You disappoint me, Myouga. I am your masters son, though you seem more concerned with the... other. Sesshoumaru again managed to narrow his eyes even further.

At this point, Inuyasha sped into the area as well, peeking around a nearby tree in curiosity. Once he was sure his nose hadnt deceived him and that these were indeed the two he was looking for, he grinned. Myouga-jiiji, did you get caught again? Sesshoumaru watched as the boy as he marched over to his side and lifted his nose into the air. Im always having to save him. He likes to hide but he gets into so much trouble!

It seemed like the first time in his life that Sesshoumaru felt he ever had to hold in a snort of mirth. This child was actually bragging, as if it might win Sesshoumarus approval. Myouga didnt think it was quite so funny. Inuyasha-sama! Please run, quickly! Or your honorable brother may see fit to kill you!

Brother? Huh? Inuyashas furry ears twitched with Inuyashas peaked interest.

Sesshoumaru-sama is your fathers son! Myouga shouted, fighting against Sesshoumarus firm hold.

Inuyasha wasnt sure what to think at first. He heard father and son, along with your, but these words didnt immediately register. When they finally did, it took another beat or so to work out the implications of the statement. It was all put together inside his head, his eyes widened in shock, though he still wasnt sure if he had understood correctly. Inuyasha gazed at Sesshoumaru with his jaw hanging open. You... You are... My brother?

Sesshoumaru raised an eyebrow, highly annoyed. Half-brother.

There was another moment that passed, after another, and another still, until finally Inuyashas grin returned ten-fold. WOW! He lunged forward and, with that ridiculous look of happiness still on his face, he began babbling worse than ever. I never knew I had a brother! And youre so cool, too! You should have seen it, Myouga-jiiji! He killed it in a second and it was so cool! And he did it with his hands too, with no weapons! It was amazing! I cant believe it, its so awesome, a brother whos so powerful! Why didnt you tell me....

The trail at the end of the sentence was somewhat awkward. There was a heavy sense of betrayal on the air, as if one of them had made a mistake that was unforgivable. Myouga managed to hang still and gulp, while the two brothers glared down at him with a force comparable to a speeding train. There was an impact coming, and it spelled out nothing good for Myouga.

Why DIDNT you tell me? Inuyasha asked, eyelids blinking slowly and with a notable measure.

I-I didnt really think it necessary. I...

Enough. Sesshoumaru had never bargained for this, nor did he think he would find use for it. It was something best left to the child and the idiot after he had squeezed Myouga and left. You will tell me...

But Inuyasha would have none of it. He furrowed his brow in anger and heaved. If he was always there, why didnt you tell me!?

You do not understand, Inuyasha-sama! Sesshoumaru-sama is not....

I DONT WANT TO BE WITH SOMEONE LIKE YOU IF HE WAS ALWAYS THERE! Inuyasha pointed to Sesshoumaru with a hideous look of a child tantrum coming on.

Sesshoumaru tried to drown it out and look directly at Myouga. You will tell me...

But Myouga wasnt listening, which Sesshoumaru did not appreciate at all. You must understand, Inuyasha-sama! Sesshoumaru-sama is a deadly youkai!

Exactly, which is why you will tell me...

YOU CANT DEFEND ME AND TEACH ME TO BE STRONG! I WANT TO BE WITH HIM! Inuyasha continued to point, and Sesshoumaru was on his last nerve.

This Sesshoumaru has said... ENOUGH! Everyone paused, and Myouga held his breath. Sesshoumaru rarely raised his voice, and normally killed whatever was annoying him. They must have really angered him.

Inuyasha, not knowing Sesshoumaru beyond the few minutes he had spent in his presence, was only stunned for a second or so before turning back to Myouga. I HATE YOU! Having expressed this, Inuyasha turned and ran into the forest, tearing tree-limbs along the way.

Oh dear.... Myouga shook his head sadly, momentarily forgetting Sesshoumaru still had a tight grip.

This Sesshoumaru demands information of the whereabouts of Tessaiga. Myouga began to tremble once more at this ultimatum.

Begging your pardon, Sesshoumaru-sama, and please dont take offense. I-I dont know where Tessaiga is...

Perhaps, then, you know where Toutousai has gone.

I... well, I havent b-been in touch with T-Toutousai in quite a long time. Not since your honorable father....

Sesshoumarus eye twitched the slightest fraction of a degree and his brow drew down in frustration. There was another pause. Very well. It seems I have no more use for you.

Sesshoumaru prepared to crush the flea, who squealed in protest. He ended up being flattened anyhow, and was tossed to the ground carelessly as Sesshoumaru stood and walked away into the trees among which Inuyasha had disappeared. While doing so, he was deeply in thought again, wondering how he might get a hold on that precious weapon, and possibly find time to fantasize about what he would do with it.

They were obviously avoiding giving him what he wanted. Why that was, he wasnt concerned with the fact. All he knew was that as much as he would have liked to kill Myouga for his poor attempt at masking his knowledge on the subject, he knew he would never gain that knowledge unless he kept the flea alive. Perhaps, if time permitted, he could use a tactic that might draw that particular information out of Myouga and Toutousai at once.

It seemed there was still time to think, if nothing else.

Aww! Thanks! I've always prided myself on my writing skills. Though Sesshoumaru is always thinking so much in this story that I have a hard time not getting bored with him, lol!
