when did this phrase come to be? When was an oister something so important or somesthing? Just wondering if anyone knows the meaning of this phrase

I'm actually going to move this to the "Did You Know" forum because it seems like if someone has an answer, that would be the best place for it.

As for me, I don't have a clue. I DO know that "Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater" came from the Middle Ages when an entire family would take a bath in the same water and the oldest would go first, leaving REALLY dirty water for an infant to bathe in. You basically had to be really careful you didn't lose the baby in there, heh.

"Oyster" though? Let's see, Oysters produce pearls right? So, logically speaking, if a person says that the whole world is his oyster, it follows that he's saying he can find riches almost anywhere in the world. Or, he just found a REALLY big pearl in a crater somewhere....
